Conductor Kelly Lovelady’s witty arrangement for a small band included whistles and sousaphone and was an imaginative delight.
Mark Aspen Reviews
Conductor Kelly Lovelady, heroically dynamic, has arranged Marschner’s orchestral score for just four musicians … the ensemble imaginatively captures the dark timbre of Marschner’s original.
The Guardian
Music director Kelly Lovelady’s arrangement for cello, double bass, sousaphone(!) and piano works tremendously well, with Jasmin Allpress doubling on wheezy harmonium for Scottish gothic horror atmosphere.
Bachtrack
Musically, Der Vampyr is a treat. The orchestra, under Lovelady’s direction, deftly navigates Marschner’s score in her new arrangement … a tour de force of vocal and orchestral power that had the audience on the edge of their seats.
Everything Theatre
Testimonial: Madeleine Todd, Soprano
Many, many thanks to Julia Mintzer and Kelly Lovelady, who are both extremely talented and extremely kind. Thanks to them, the rehearsal space always felt free, non-judgemental and safe, so we could all get stuck into the weirder, freakier parts of this opera to the absolute fullest. The good vibes in the rehearsal space were absolutely down to your positivity and leadership, and made the process so much fun to look back on. Sometimes being a singer can be scary—lots of new people, things to memorise and high notes to reach—but in this case I’m happy to say all the scares were left to the vampires!

Driving, repetitive rhythms were pushed hard, with a strong sense of urgency imparted by director Kelly Lovelady. There was something relentless and unaccommodating about this performance … as if the audience were uninvited guests at a private ritual.
planet hugill
Lovelady kept the collective ensemble tight, and the five-strong double bass section came into its own. The literally vibrant experience of being so close to massed basses will stay with me for a long time … [an] imaginative, powerful programme.

Testimonial: Julia Mintzer, Director
Kelly delivered an extremely effective orchestral reduction for chamber ensemble which retained the quality and energy of the original symphonic scoring without sacrificing support for a strong cast of 14. She created the arrangement with consideration for three acoustically challenging venues, each with a different physical orientation for performers and orchestra. She had minimal rehearsal time in each venue, and was charged with adapting rapidly. Kelly is an inspired and imaginative collaborator, respectful of the diverse needs of contributors across a mixed artform project, and of dramatically different voices and working styles within one cast. She has a collaborative approach to preparation and performance which allowed the performers to find their own most authentic way into her interpretation. The response to a question was never “no” but “okay, how?” I found Kelly to be an energetic and intuitive conductor and coach, and deeply appreciated her sensitivity to dramatic intentions and specific readings of the text.

Kelly Lovelady conducted with masterful sensitivity throughout … [her] carefully considered programming makes abundant conceptual sense … It was one of the most remarkable musical experiences of my year … demanding that we look and listen. A sincere and sensitive exploration of ethnicity, domesticity and violence.
tempo: a quarterly review of new music
Utterly captivating … This was a daring and powerful theatrical evening which lasted less than an hour, but whose emotion will resonate for far longer.

In 2017 Kelly chose my work Pure for found object, orchestra and subtone for inclusion in Ruthless Jabiru’s landmark programme Fuel: a co-production with the Art Not Oil Coalition for the 2017 Joy & Dissent festival of cultural Activism in London. In the years since the piece was premiered, the live recording from this performance is one of my absolute favourite realisations. My composition leverages animated graphic score, fixed electronics and elements of guided improvisation which demand a high level of commitment of the orchestra: a commitment that I absolutely hear realised under the direction of Kelly Lovelady. Her openness to exploring conceptual scores and new media within a large ensemble context was also extremely impressive. That she continues to run a freelance orchestra in London is a remarkable achievement only possible through true and effective leadership and enthusiasm.

Conductor/Producer, Ruthless Jabiru x City of London Festival x LSO St. Luke’s; London, UK — 2011
Soprano Emma Pearson and Ruthless Jabiru at LSO St Luke’s — programme of Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Peter Sculthorpe
The most enjoyable concert of our sampling of the City of London Festival has been one of American and Australian music by a new orchestra of Australian Londoners … The group which debuted last night was welded into a real entity by its founder conductor Kelly Lovelady, one of two bright stars of the night. She led the music sensitively with good ensemble and a feeling that everyone was listening to each other. Her rapport with her players and with soloist Emma Pearson was a delight.
