Hi friends.. last month was ᴀ–ᴍᴀʏ–ᴢɪɴɢ! Highlight was 100% the chance to immerse myself in and conduct the music of one of my favourite humans, Gabriel Prokofiev’s Techno Suite: Dark Lights and an earlier work, Breaking Screens. Huge thanks to everyone who joined us back at IKLECTIK for the Dark Lights LIVE album launch on 28 May, a few reflections from me here:

You can also read about the gig as part of a thinkpiece in Gramophone Magazine titled The Art of Music-Making in an AI World which includes these beautiful words from Martin Cullingford:

The work weaves together acoustic and electronics with a boundary-blurring fluidity: was that rhythmic sound electronics or a string, or that textural sound static or subtle percussion? At one point an atmospherically urgent orchestral section suddenly gives way to a delicate digital pulse – and the impact is strangely moving.

It reminds me of one of the things I love most about contemporary music—its power to disarm us, to break the cult of familiarity that’s become a trope of the so-called “classical” experience. New music forces us to make ourselves vulnerable by listening unprepared.. there’s no point trying to pretend we know what to expect next so we’re all there living in the moment together!
